Box Score 2 SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team recorded a pair of wins at the Little East/NEWMAC Challenge on Saturday, beating both Keene State College and Plymouth State University by identical 3-1 scores.
The Pioneers, winners in six of their last seven matches, are now 16-6 overall.
Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) had 13 kills, two solo blocks, and three block assists against Keene State, while
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had 19 kills against just four errrors in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 31-29) win. The two combined to hit .338 for the match.
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) had 17 assists and 13 digs, and
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) had nine kills, 24 assists, and 11 digs. It was the first time Smith had defeated the Owls since a 3-1 win in the 2007 season, and the first time Smith had played a 30 point set since 2008.
Against Plymouth State, Smith pounded out 12 service aces in a 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 24-26, 25-10) win. Sarlandt had four of those aces, to go with three solo blocks, four block assists, and 10 more kills. Drummond tacked on three service aces, along with 12 kills and a solo block.
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) chipped in with 12 assists, seven kills, and 12 digs, while
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona),
Sonia Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst), and
Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam/St. Johns School) also reached double-figures in digs with 20, 10, and 11, respectively. Ashworth added 18 assists and eight digs as Smith beat Plymouth State for the first time since 2009.
Smith will play at home for the first time in three weeks on Tuesday, hosting Wellesley College at 7 p.m.
