Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Senior
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) became the ninth player in school history to record 1,000 career assists as the Smith College volleyball team won their final two matches at the 2013 Volleyball Hall of Fame tournament. Smith defeated Westfiield State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22), and Brandeis 3-1 (25-15, 26-24, 19-25, 25-16). Smith is now 19-7 overall.
Ashworth, who only began playing setter as a junior, joins Lauren Perry '06, Nancy VanderVeer '00, Allison Mathias '98, Erin Habecker '02, Lauren Martinez '11, Courtney Faria '12, Mikal Minarich '10, and Erin Shanks '05 in the 1,000 assist club. Ashworth, VanderVeer, and Minarich are the only players in school history with 1,000 career assists and digs.
Ashworth got the assist early in the third set against Westfield State, setting up classmate
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) for a kill. Drummond hit .429, notching 20 kills to go with a service ace and a solo block. Ashworth had 33 assists to go with seven digs.
Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) had 10 kills and
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) nine.
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) topped Smith with 10 digs. Smith never trailedin the third and final set, going up by as many as four on a Westfield State service error. Julia Warner had 12 kills and 14 digs for the Owls, who are 16-13.
Against Brandeis, Ashworth had 35 more assists, adding five kills and 19 digs. Drummond hit for 20 more kills, while Sarlandt chipped in 13, hitting .440. Voorhes had 31 digs, and
Sonia Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) had 19 as Smith limited Brandeis to .111 hitting as a team, including -.042 in the first set. Liz Hood had 17 kills and 18 digs for the Judges (9-20).
Smith returns to the court on Tuesday night, hosting Mount Holyoke at 7 p.m. in a NEWMAC contest.
