Game Preview: Soccer vs. Coast Guard

October 05, 2013

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Not even the government shutdown could derail the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup between the Smith College soccer team (3-5-1, 1-1 NEWMAC) and the United States Coast Guard Academy (4-6, 1-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Today's game is a fundraiser for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC). MBCC was founded in 1991 by women concerned with the lack of attention to breast cancer.  Thanks to the overwhelming response to our call to action, Massachusetts became the first state to declare breast cancer an epidemic, MBCC founded Silent Spring Institute to investigate the link between breast cancer and the environment, and now we are the state's leading breast cancer organization.  To donate, please click here.

Last Meeting:  Smith beat Coast Guard, 2-1 in double-overtime on October 2, 2012.  Lily Eriksen (Seattle, Wash./Bush School) scored her first career goal for the game winner with less then four minutes left in the second overtime period.

The Series: Smith leads the all-time series, 9-4.  The last three meetings between these two teams have been decided by one goal.

Fast Facts: Like Smith, Coast Guard beat Clark 2-1 in overtime for their first NEWMAC win...the scores of the last three games for the Bears have all been 2-1...the Coast Guard schedule has resulted in a win followed by two losses for three straight sequences...the Bears have allowed just 11 goals in 10 games...Smith has lost three straight, most recently a 1-0 defeat to Brandeis...the Pioneers are playing just their fourth home game of the year, but four of the next five are at home...Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) has 24 saves in her last three games after making 22 in the first six...

Next Up: Smith hosts Springfield College at 4 p.m. on October 8.  Coast Guard will host WPI at 7 p.m. on the same date.
