NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team was defeated by Emerson College by an 8-1 score in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis match on Saturday. The Pioneers fell to 0-6, with an 0-6 record in NEWMAC play, while Emerson improves to 2-7, and 2-5 against NEWMAC opponents.
Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard), playing in her first competitive match of the season, gained Smith's only point at No. 6 singles. Steck defeated Madeline Bilis in a third set tiebreaker to win the point 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.
The Lions got wins at the other five singles positions, including a tough match at No. 5. Sophia Trilling edged
Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School) in another three set match, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. Lacey Russell, posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) at No. 1, while Savannah Mosser beat
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Jana Winfield beat
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Natalie Nicholas beat
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha) 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4.
In doubles action, the Lions got an 8-4 win from Russell and Mosser over Samawi and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) at No. 1, while at No. 2, Winfield and Nicholas topped Tanco and Lopez 8-5. Triling and Bilis edged
Hana Foe (Tempe, Ariz./McClintock) and Dernbach 8-5 at No. 3.
Smith will hit the road for a trip to Clark University on Tuesday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. Emerson will host Wellesley at 5 p.m. on the same day.
