Soccer Stumbles Against Springfield

October 08, 2013

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Springfield College used five different goal scorers en route to a 5-0 win over host Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.

Springfield ends a two game winless streak, improving to 7-3-1, and maintains their unbeaten NEWMAC record at 3-0-1.  Smith dips to 4-6-1, with a 2-2 NEWMAC ledger.

It was Smith who nearly opened the scoring in the game, as Sarah Myers had to leap to touch GiGi Ross (Colt's Neck, N.J./Colt's Neck)' shot over the crossbar in the 7th minute.  The Pride made the breakthrough five minutes later when Kim Rasmussen slipped home her third goal of the season following a Julia Cormier corner kick.

Springfield doubled their lead on Brooke Hattinger's 28th minute strike, and added a third five minutes before halftime when Karly Barrett lashed home a volley from 35 yards out past Smith goalie Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull).

The Pride added second half goals from Elizabeth Monsen in the 54th minute and Heather Slavin in the 86th to seal away the win.

Lynch made a career high 16 saves in net for Smith, who were outshot 23-3.  Myers played the first half and made two stops for Springfield.  Holly Ouellette played the second period and was not called upon to make a save.

Smith will continue NEWMAC play with a trip to Emerson College on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Springfield will head to Wheaton College for a re-match of last season's NEWMAC Championship game.
