WORCESTER, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team ended a 13 match conference losing streak with a 6-3 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tennis play on Tuesday night.
The Pioneers are now 1-6, and 1-6 in the NEWMAC, while Clark falls to 2-11, and 0-6 in the NEWMAC.
Smith led 2-1 after doubles, thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3.  The tandem of 
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and 
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) combined for an 8-5 win over Rebecca Kravetz and Vera Snyder at No. 2, and 
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) and 
Hana Foe (Tempe, Ariz./McClintock) used a tiebreaker to beat Molly Kao and Ellie Bakalochuk 9-8 (10-7) at No. 3.
Clark did grab a point at No. 1 doubles, when Sarah Sachs and Phoebe Hughes earned an 8-1 win over 
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha) and 
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.), but Smith sealed the win with four wins in singles.
Cheung beat Sachs 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, and 
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) beat Kera Snyder 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.  Kethryn Dernbach gutted out a 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-3 win over Jen Comi at No. 5, and 
Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard) also won in three sets, with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Kao.  
The Cougars' other points came when Hughes beat Samawi 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, and Kravetz beat Yi 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.
Smith will play their final match of the fall season on Saturday at MIT.  
Clark will host Babson on October 9.
