November 02, 2013

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The regular season comes to a close, but there is plenty to play for when the Smith College soccer team (5-9-2, 3-5-1 NEWMAC) hosts regionally ranked Wheaton College (12-5-2, 7-1-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday.  The Pioneers will honor their three seniors before the game.

The Series: Wheaton leads 26-18-1, and has won 23 straight between these two.

Fast Facts: Wheaton is coming off a double-overtime, 1-1 tie with Babson...it was the first goal Wheaton has allowed in six games...10 of the Lyons' 12 wins are by shutout...Kristina Braga and Gabriella Verde lead Wheaton with eight goals each...Smith enters today's game on the back of a 1-0 loss to Mount Holyoke...The Pioneers end the regular season at home for the second straight year...Smith still can qualify for the NEWMAC tournament (more on that below)...Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) could end up the NEWMAC's leader in goals...

Playoff Permutations:  Smith needs to win to guarantee a NEWMAC playoff berth.  The Pioneers could also get in with a tie or a loss, as long as that result matches WPI's result against Mount Holyoke.  Wheaton could claim the regular season championship with a win and an MIT loss or tie against Coast Guard.
