Game Preview: Lacrosse vs. MIT

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate begins for the Smith College lacrosse team (1-6, 0-0 NEWMAC), when the Pioneers travel to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2-5, 0-1 NEWMAC).  Smith has won seven of the 15 meetings between the schools.


Last Meeting: Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) scored six goals and set up two more as Smith beat MIT, 17-15 on March 24, 2012.  It was the first league win for the Pioneers in more than four years.

Smith Overview: Smith heads into their fifth straight game away from home after a 16-7 defeat to Westfield State.  Including today's game, Smith will play five of their next six on the road, before three games at home to close out the regular season?

MIT Overview: The Engineers have lost three in a row, starting with a 13-11 defeat to Wheaton in their conference opener.  MIT also lost both games of their Spring Break trip, falling to Colorado College (20-9) and Pacific University (15-7).

Smith Player to Watch: First year Christina Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) has scored two goals in each of her last two games, and has a team high five assists.

MIT Player to Watch: Senior Laura Wacker is fourth in the NEWMAC in goals, with 23.  

Did you know? Smith's wins over MIT and Mount Holyoke a year were the most conference wins in a season since 2001.  The record for conference wins is five, done by the 1999 squad.
