NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team fell in a non-conference tennis match to Nichols College by a 7-2 score on Saturday.
Smith is now 1-8 on the year, while the Bison improve to 13-5.
Smith earned one point at doubles, where the tandem of Victoria von Saucken and
Carly Melillo (Chester, Conn./Valley) defeated Michelle Keklik and Kasie Chapin 8-4 at the No. 3 position. Nichols took the other two doubles spots, with Anna Dyakiv and Lindsay Benoit besting Smith's
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) 8-2 at No. 1, and Alex Cifone and Megan Woodruff beating
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) 8-3 at No. 2.
The Pioneers got their lone point at singles at No. 6, where
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha), playing in her first match of the season, outlasted Keklik 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-6.
Dubin went to a third set as well, falling to Dyakiv 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 at No. 1, while Gouchoe-Hanas and Samawi fell by the same score at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, to Benoit and Cifone.
Woodruff toppled von Saucken 3-6, 3-6 at No. 4, and Samantha Rydell beat Melillo 1-6, 0-6 at No. 5.
Smith will next play Newbury College on March 16, at 4 p.m. Nichols, meanwhile, will play the University of Minnesota-Crookston in Orlando, Fla., on March 19.
