POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--The Smith College tennis team opened the Seven Sisters Championship against host Vassar College and NEWMAC opponent Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon.
Vassar
The Brewers (7-3), ranked No. 25 in the country, took a 5-0 decision, with all five matches having the same 6-0, 6-0 score. Ava Sadeghi beat
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) at No. 1 singles, while at No. 2,
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) fell by the same score to Sam Schapiro. Winnie Yates earned a third point for Vassar with a win over
Jinan Martiuk (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview).
Vassar also took both doubles matches, with the duo of Kyla Gouchoe-Hanas and
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) losing to Lauren Stauffer and Lindsay Kantor at No. 1 and
Carly Melillo (Chester, Conn./Valley) and
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha) falling to Kelsey Van Noy and Hannah Van Denmark, at No. 2.
Wellesley
In Saturday's second match, Smith was bested by Wellesley by a 5-0 count. Four of the matches were by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Samawi moved up to No. 1 singles and was defeated by Sojung Lee, while Martiuk also moved up a spot, falling to Suzanne Barth.
Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School) was dealt a loss at the No. 3 position by Elena Bowen.
The Blue also won the two doubles matches - Gouchoe-Hanas and Tanco were toppled at No. 1 by Diana Granger and Kendall Tada, while Melillo and Lopez lost to Veronica Lin and Catherine Matalis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2
Smith will conclude the tournament with matches against Bryn Mawr at 9 am and Mount Holyoke at 1:30 pm
