Smith Lacrosse Downed By Mount Holyoke

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Kate Detrick (Petaluma, Calif./Sonoma Academy) scored a career high five goals, but the Smith College lacrosse team fell to longtime rival Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 17-6.  Smith is now 3-11, and 0-5 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while Mount Holyoke is 10-3, and 3-2 in NEWMAC games.

Julia Bell scored a game high six goals with two assists for the Lyons, while Catherine Ryan scored four times and set up one more and Molly Macdonald had three goals.

Mount Holyoke jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the strength of goals from Catherine Ryan, Kirsten Kilburn, and Bell, but Smith responded with Detrick's first of the game to make it a 3-1 contest with 20:19 left in the first half.  

Ryan, Lindsey Kanno, and Bell scored the next three before Detrick beat MHC 'keeper Liz Malenfant on a free position effort with 12:58 on the clock.  

The Lyons surged ahead with five straight goals, as Bell netted a pair of unassisted tallies, and Ryan, Kanno, and Kilburn also scored.  Detrick and Ryan traded goals with two minutes left in the first half to send MHC into halftime ahead 12-3.

Macdonald scored twice more in the first two minutes of the second half before Smith scored through Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), and the Lyons scored three of the final five goals of the game.

Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made nine saves in net for Smith, while Malenfant made 11 in the Mount Holyoke net.

Smith will resume play when the Pioneers host UMass-Dartmouth at 4:30 on Thursday, April 18.  Mount Holyoke will close out the regular season with a trip to Babson College at 1 pm on Saturday, April 20.
