Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) and
Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) each scored as the Smith College field hockey team finished their final game before NEWMAC play begins with a 2-0 win over Elms College on Tuesday night. The Pioneers are now 5-0 on the season, while Elms falls to 1-5.
Smith, which outshot the Blazers 35-1, peppered the Elms goal from the outset.
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer)'s shot was blocked just three minutes into the game, and Elms' goalie Samantha Alvino turned away three more of Stein's shots in the first 15 minutes of the game.
The Pioneers made the breakthrough in the 24th minute. Odhiambo, who had only been the field about 30 seconds, turned home a pass from Stein for her third goal of the season and second in as many games. Smith carried that 1-0 lead into halftime, denied more goals by Alvino, who saved shots from Stein and
Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) in the final minutes of the frame.
It was more of the same in the second half, as Stein,
Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), and
Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) were denied by Alvino, who finished with 18 saves. Bester wrapped up the win with her third goal of the season in the final minute of the contest.
Abbey Petronzio (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) started in net for Smith, and did not make a save, as Elms mustered a single shot.
Smith hosts WPI on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m. Elms will be at Clark on September 19 for a 7 p.m. start.
