NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team fell to NEWMAC opponent Babson College in the Pioneers' second match of the season Friday afternoon.
Smith is now 0-2, and 0-2 in the NEWMAC, while Babson is 5-1, and 2-0 against NEWMAC foes.
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) picked up Smith's lone point at No. 6 singles. Â Tanco beat Sarah Calmas, winning the first set 6-4, but falling in the second 6-0. Â This set up a third set tiebreaker that Tanco won 10-3.
The Beavers took the other five points in singles play, with Dana Weick, Sarah Whitaker, and Tori Paolino recording identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 2, 3, and 5 respectively. Â Weick beat Smith's
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy), while Whitaker edged
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer), and Paolino beat
Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School). Â Babson also got a 6-0, 6-1 win from Alex Freeman over
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) at the No. 1 position, and Alexis Ferraro beat
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Babson also won all three doubles matches. Â Weick and Freeman beat
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and Lopez 8-0 at No. 1, and Whitaker and Ferraro beat Cheung and
Hana Foe (Tempe, Ariz./McClintock) by the same score at No. 2. Â Paolino and Courtney Fischer completed the doubles play with an 8-0 win over Yi and
Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard) at the No. 3 position.
Smith will continue conference play, traveling to Wheaton College for a 1 p.m. start tomorrow.
