Soccer Suffers Shutout Loss At Babson

September 28, 2013

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Jessica DiPhilippo scored twice and assisted on another goal, all in the second half, helping Babson College pull away for a 4-0 victory over visiting Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the victory, Babson moves to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play, while Smith drops to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.

McKenna opened the scoring just 7:13 into the game following a corner kick. Smith was unable to clear the ball and McKenna, who took a feed from Moore on the left flank, hit a bending shot that hit off the inside of the far post and off a Pioneers' defender and into the net.

Moore doubled the Babson advantage with her sixth goal of the season at the 59:11 mark, using a through ball from DiPhilippo to get behind the Smith back line, and finishing a shot inside the right post. DiPhilippo extended the lead just 3:19 later, knocking home a rebound of a long shot by Shah, to put the Beavers ahead 3-0 in the 63rd minute.

DiPhilippo capped the scoring in the 87th minute, taking a feed from Kantor, and drilling a blast from the top of the box just underneath the crossbar for the final margin.

Junior Melina Kapotsis and first-year Meaghan Merullo made two saves in combining for their sixth shutout of the season for Babson. First-year Alana Lynch made six stops for the Pioneers, which were outshot 14-5 on the day.

Both squads are back in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to face WPI while Smith will be on the road at Brandeis.
