Volleyball Sweeps Simmons To Start 2013

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team began 2013 with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) win over Simmons College on Tuesday evening.  The Pioneers won their season opener for the first time in two years.

Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) hit .533 with 10 kills, while adding three solo blocks, three block assists, and a pair of service aces to her statline.  Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) ran the offense with 15 assists, while Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) had nine kills, 12 assists, and 12 digs.  Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) made her collegiate debut and had 13 digs, while Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam/St. Johns School) had six kills and 10 digs, and Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville), also playing in her first collegiate game, had 14 digs and three service aces.

Smith led from start to finish in each of the first two sets, and opened up a 16-6 lead in the third before the Sharks rallied with a 13-3 burst that tied the score at 19.  Smith then closed out the game with six of the final eight points.

Smith travels to Colby College for the Colby Invitational on Friday evening, with the first game against Maine Maritime Academy set for a 7 p.m. start.
