NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team (1-0) will make a four hour trip to Waterville, Maine to take part in the Colby College Invitational this weekend. The action starts with a Friday matchup against Maine Maritime (0-2), followed by Saturday tilts against Colby (0-0) and Gordon College (3-0).
Last Meeting (Maine Maritime): This is the first meeting between the schools.
Last Meeting (Colby): Smith fell in a three set match to the Mules in the MIT Tournament on September 22, 2012. The Pioneers last beat Colby in 2007.
Last Meeting (Gordon): Smith beat the Fighting Scots 3-0 on October 23, 2010 at the Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament.
The Series: As noted, this is the first meeting between Smith and Maine Maritime...Smith leads the all-time series with Colby 7-4, but the Mules have won the last two meetings...Smith also holds a 14-8 lead in matchups with Gordon, winning five of the last seven dating back to 1996.
Fast Facts: This is the season opener for Colby...Maine Maritime has already played two other teams from The Pine Tree State in St. Joseph's and Southern Maine...Gordon has played a St. Joseph's, but the one from Connecticut, as well as yet another Maine school in Husson...Colby and Gordon will play in the other matchup on Friday...
