Pioneers Come Up Short Against Engineers

October 18, 2014

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A pair of goals, one in each half, pushed the MIT soccer team to a win over Smith Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers record stands at 5-6-1, and 3-3 in NEWMAC play after the loss, while the Engineers improve to 10-3-2, 6-0-1 on the season.

Smith sophomore Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) commenced the contest with an early goal-scoring opportunity when she drilled a shot from the far side that deflected off the cross bar and landed in the middle of the box. MIT's defense cleared the ball out of the zone and didn't allow the Pioneers to register another shot until late in the first half.

Morgan Moroi put MIT on the board with her sixth goal of the season when she pounced on a loose ball in the box and directed a shot past Smith's freshman goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) at 23:25. Olivia Struckman, who led the Engineers down the field prior to their goal, sent a cross into the box that was deflected off Hall's hands and landed on Moroi's foot.

MIT held a six-shot (9-3) edge after the first half. Hall picked up four saves in the stanza, while the Engineers' Lauren Ullmann saved a pair of attempts in the first half.

Smith had a string of three-straight attempts midway through the second period of the 1-0 game. Shots from sophomore Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and a pair of shots by senior Jenna Bicierro (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) were turned away by Ullmann and her replacement, Hannah Zlotnick.

The Engineers scored an insurance goal in the 61st minute, when Struckman scored her eighth goal of the season on an assist from Moroi.

Hall suffered the loss in goal for the Pioneers despite making six saves. Engineers starter Ullmann played the first 76 minutes with three saves, while Zlotnick made two saves in 14 minutes of play.

Smith next heads to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday to take on WPI at 7 p.m.
