Volleyball Takes Part in NEWMAC/Little East Challenge

Pioneers face off with Keene State and Plymouth State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Smith volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks Saturday at the 2014 Seven NEWMAC/Little East Challenge, hosted by Plymouth State University. The Pioneers fell 3-0 to Keene State, before losing 3-0 to Plymouth State in the nightcap.

In the first match of the day, the Pioneers battled with the Keene State Owls, but ultimately came up short, as the Owls won 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-19) to improve to 14-14.

First year Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) and sophomore Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian) led the way for the Pioneers with a five kills each. First year Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) tallied a team-high seven assists, while senior Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) notched a game-high 12 digs.

In the 3-0 loss to Plymouth State (25-9, 25-13, 25-14), sophomore Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) led the offense, piling up five kills and eight digs. Sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) registered a team-high 15 digs, while Marquez recorded seven digs and six assists. Rubin made her presence felt at the net, tallying a solo block and a pair of block assists.

Smith (6-15) returns to play Tuesday when they travel to Wellesley, Mass. to take on the Blue of Wellesley College. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
