Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Smith College soccer team battled Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for 110 physical minutes under chilly conditions Tuesday night. After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the two teams settled for a 1-1 tie in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown.
The Pioneers (5-6-2, 3-3-1) opened the scoring in the 19th minute of competition, when sophomore
Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) found the back of the net on a feed from fellow sophomore
Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) that snuck past the Engineer (6-6-3, 3-2-2) keeper. Smith maintained their one-goal lead until the final five minutes of regulation, when WPI scored on a shot from the corner of the box. After neither squad was able to score over the final five minutes of regulation, the game advanced into the first overtime period.
WPI outshot Smith 5-to-1 over the 20 minutes of extra time, but neither found the back of the net to break up the tie. In fact, the Pioneers forced the tie despite being outshot by a considerable 21-to-10 margin. First-year goalkeeper
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) played a big role in the draw by making 11 saves on the night.
Smith is back in action on Saturday, October 25 when they celebrate Senior Day against Wellesley College at 1 p.m.
