Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - With a postseason appearance on the line, the Smith College soccer team delivered Tuesday afternoon, beating Mount Holyoke, 2-0, to clinch a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) playoffs for the first time since 2007.
The deciding goal for Smith (6-6-3, 4-3-2 NEWMAC) came off the foot of junior
Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) on a feed from sophomore
Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston). Houston's shot deflected off the Lyons' goalkeeper, ricocheted off a Mount Holyoke defender and rolled into the net.
The Lyons had their best scoring opportunity in the 42
nd minute, when first-year Jentrie Grissom's shot clanged off the crossbar.
The two teams went into the half tied 0-0, with the Pioneers holding a 12-5 advantages on shots taken and a slim 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Smith finally broke through in the 56
th minute on Houston's seventh goal of the season, and added an insurance goal nine minutes later when a perfectly placed cross by Foody found sophomore
Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), who headed the ball past the Lyons' keeper.
The win gave the Pioneers a bit of redemption from a year ago, when a 1-0 Mount Holyoke win on Oct. 29 dashed Smith's hopes of securing the #7-seed in the 2013 NEWMAC Playoffs.
The Pioneers were not to be denied Tuesday, and first-year goalkeeper
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) was a big reason why. Hall, the reigning NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Rookie of the Week, stopped three shots on her way to recording her sixth shutout of the season.
The Lyons goalkeeper Zoe Marshall tallied nine saves in the loss.
Smith returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to Wheaton College (Mass.) for a 2 p.m. clash while Mount Holyoke wraps up their regular-season on Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest at WPI.
