Field Hockey takes on 10th-ranked Wellesley College

October 04, 2014

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Natalie Gruet had two goals and an assist to lead No. 10 Wellesley College to a 5-0 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday.

With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-9, and 0-4 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley is now 11-1, and 4-0 against NEWMAC foes.

After Wellesley scored the game's first goal at the 1:44 mark, Smith had an opportunity to tie the contest, but Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts)'s shot following a penalty corner was blocked. The Blue converted on their ensuing penalty corner attempt three minutes later to push their lead to 2-0.

Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough)'s defensive save denied Wellesley's Gruet, but the Blue broke through for a third time when Hannah Flesch's shot off a penalty corner found the back of the net. Wellesley added a fourth marker before the end of the first half.

The Blue struck again in the opening minutes of the second half, as Gruet notched her second goal of the match to put the game out of reach.

First-year Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) started and played the first 48 minutes in the cage for Smith, making six saves, while classmate Molly Peek (South Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) played the final 22 minutes for the Pioneers, making one save.

Four Pioneers took a shot on goal, as Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), Amanda Lavond (Campbell, Calif./Westmont), Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) and Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) each tallied a shot on goal.

Smith will travel to No. 19 Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday at 7 pm.

Saturday's contest took place as part of the NEWMAC's Play4TheCure game series. Eight NEWMAC field hockey teams (Wheaton, Springfield, MIT, Babson, Smith, WPI, Clark, Wellesley and Mount Holyoke) competed at four sites, where they supported the National Foundation for Cancer Research. The eight teams have joined together to raise funds that will be donated to NFCR. Please support this cause by donating at:
