Pioneers concede late goal, fall to Pride

October 07, 2014

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Smith College Pioneers (4-5-1, 2-2 NEWMAC) battled defensively on the road, but fell 1-0 in a heart-breaker to Springfield College courtesy of a 75th minute goal from the Pride.

Springfield was credited with 14 shots and didn't allow Smith to get off a shot, but despite the disparity in attempts, the Pioneers looked just as dangerous as the Pride. Smith's veteran defense did a great job of neutralizing Springfield's attack and forcing attempts that did not produce very dangerous opportunities.

Led by a pair of saves from first-year goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield), the Pioneers looked primed to be heading into extra time against the Pride, but Springfield found a crack in Smith's stout defense late in the match.

The game-winning goal was scored in the 75th minute, when Springfield's Jessica Miller fed Nicole Fowler for her sixth marker of the season.

The one goal proved to be the difference-maker in the match as Smith couldn't generate an attack over the final 15 minutes to find the equalizer.

Up next, the Pioneers host Emerson College on Sunday, October 12 at 2 p.m.
