NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Playing at home, the Smith College tennis team kept its win streak alive this afternoon as the Pioneers defeated Clark University, 6-3, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match. It was the second straight win for the Pioneers.
Smith (2-5, 2-5 NEWMAC) quickly took a 2-1 advantage in the contest, winning two of three doubles matches. The Pioneers got on the board when its No. 1 team of senior
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and sophomore
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) took an 8-4 decision over first-year Isabelle Long and sophomore Stephanie Gallant. Clark tied the score at 1-1 when its No. 2 team of juniors Kera Snyder and Rebecca Kravetz downed seniors
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer). Sophomore
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and first-year
Samantha Peikes () gave the Pioneers back the lead with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
With the score tied 3-3 after the Cougars took two of the first three singles matches, Peikes scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles to give the Pioneers a lead they never surrendered.
Also picking up straight sets victories for Smith were Cheung at No. 2, Samawi at No. 5 and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) at No. 3.
Smith will return to action on Saturday, October 11 when the Pioneers host the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a part of its Rally for the Cure match at 1 p.m. Clark will take on the Engineers of MIT on Friday at 5 p.m.
