Volleyball squares off with WPI

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College volleyball team continued New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Thursday by hosting the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Smith dropped the conference match-up by the final score of 3-0.

The Engineers (10-13, 1-6) took the match by the set scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-16. Smith (6-11, 1-6) was led by sophomores Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) and Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian), who tallied six and five kills, respectively. Sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) and Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) shared the setting duties, as each recorded nine assists. Marquez finished with three aces and 16 digs, while Voorhes added an ace and 14 digs. Senior Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) posted a team-best 17 digs

The Pioneers return to the court on Saturday, when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take part in the Tom Hay Tournament, hosted by Westfield State University. Smith opens tournament play against Seven Sisters foe Vassar College at 12:30 p.m.
