Danguilan Honored on Senior Day

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team rallied to take the third set of their match against Wheaton College, 25-23 on Saturday, but the Lyons prevailed, taking set four, 25-21 and the match, 3-1.

Wheaton took the opening set, 25-17, and followed with a 25-14 win in set two, before Smith bounced back with a 25-23 triumph in set three. The home team battled in the fourth set, but the visitors held on for the four-set victory.

Smith was led by Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), who was the lone Pioneer senior to be honored prior to the match. Danguilan finished her last match as a Pioneer with a match-high 23 digs, to go along with one kill and one service ace. The Round Lake High product ended her final collegiate season by finishing third on the team with 285 total digs.

Sophomore Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian) led the Smith attack with 13 kills, while fellow sophomore Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) pitched in six. First-year Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) finished the match with four kills, 19 assists and 19 digs.

Sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) anchored the defensive efforts along with Danguilan for Smith, recording seven assists and 11 digs.

The Pioneers conclude the 2014 season with an overall record of 6-21.
