Barriscale named to All-Tournament Team as Smith concludes 2014 Tyler Tip-Off Tournament

November 17, 2014

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – First-year Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds to earn All-Tournament team honors but it wasn't enough as the Middlebury College women's basketball team picked up a 67-50 road win over Smith College to claim the 2014 Tyler Tip-Off Tournament Championship on Sunday.

Barriscale finished the day with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and averaged six points, nine rebounds, and 1.5 steals during the two-day tournament. First-year Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Preparatory) finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals, while senior Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) added seven points.

Middlebury (2-0) opened the game with a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of jumpers by senior Rachel Crews (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) just two minutes and 40 seconds following the opening tip. The Pioneers answered with an 11-3 run of their own that spanned four-and-a-half minutes to take their first lead of the contest, 11-10.

Foul trouble caught up with Smith (1-1), as the Pioneers picked up their tenth foul at the 12:23 mark of the first half. The two sides traded baskets before back-to-back threes stretched the Panthers lead to 27-17 with 5:08 remaining in the first.

Smith used some of their own defensive tactics to cut the Middlebury lead down to five (29-24), keyed by a three and a pair of free-throws by junior Shannon Saywell (Groton, Mass./Lawrence Acad.). The Panthers closed out the first stanza on a 10-4 run, capped off by a three pointer at the buzzer by Kaufman to take a 39-28 lead into the intermission.

Middlebury shot 11-of-22 (.500) from the field and 5-of-8 (.625) from beyond the arc, while the Pioneers shot 10-of-28 (.357) from the floor, 3-of-11 (.273) from downtown and 5-of-7 (.714) from the foul stripe.

The second half turned into a bit of a defensive affair, but the Panthers maintained a comfortable double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the game. Smith was able to get their deficit to eight (54-46) after a layup by Barriscale at the 4:12 mark, but Middlebury closed out the contest on a 13-4 run to seal the victory.

Middlebury finished the day shooting 18-of-41 (.439) overall and 6-of-13 (.462) from three, while Smith shot 20-of-65 (.308) from the floor and 3-for-26 (.115) from 3-point range.

Endicott's Kayleen Whall (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro), Rivier's Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne), Middlebury's Elizabeth Knox (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and Sarah Kaufman (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) rounded out the All-Tournament selections.

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 when they host the Williams College Ephs at 7 p.m.
