NORTHAMPTON, Mass. –
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and
Jinan Martiuk (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) each won their respective singles flight as the Smith College tennis team opened the spring campaign with a 7-2 defeat to visiting Curry on Saturday in a non-conference match played at the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.
Samawi defeated Kimberly Love 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles as Martiuk cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the bottom of the lineup.
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) and
Melanie Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) battled Love and Kayla Prete at No. 2 doubles before the Colonels duo won the last two games for an 8-5 triumph. Megan Mulroony teamed with Lauren Chuha at No. 1 singles to post an 8-3 win over Isabella Eyman and
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.). Elizabeth Zarkades and Devin Curley handed
Hana Foe (Tempe, Ariz./McClintock) and
Hannah Keys (Potomac, Md./Field School) an 8-2 setback at No. 3.
Mulroony went on to defeat Cheung 6-1, 6-3 in singles action while Chuha and Prete each were forced to win a tiebreak at No. 3 and No. 4. Chuhua dropped the first set, 6-3, to Yi before earning a 6-4 win in the second and eventually won 10-3. Prete took the first set 7-5 and
Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard) claimed the second 6-4 before falling 10-2. Zarkades posted identical 6-3, 6-3 sets to claim the fifth singles flight over
Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School).
The Pioneers head to Mount Holyoke on February 28 for a 5:00 p.m. match against Bates.
