SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Smith College tennis team absorbed a 9-0 setback in a neutral site match against Bates in a non-conference contest played at Mount Holyoke.
The doubles teams of
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) and Isabelle Eyeman,
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) and
Melanie Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) along with
Hana Foe (Tempe, Ariz./McClintock) and
Hannah Keys (Potomac, Md./Field School) all fell 8-0 as Bates took the 3-0 lead.
Yi won a pair of games for the Pioneers at No. 3 singles in a 6-0, 6-2 defeat while Cheung,
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy), Eyeman,
Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard) and
Jinan Martiuk (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) all fell 6-0, 6-0.
Smith (1-9) returns to action on March 17 with an 8:00 a.m. match against Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla. Bates (3-1) faces Mount Holyoke at 10:00 a.m.
