Game Preview: Basketball vs. Babson

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The top-seeded Smith College basketball team (15-10) will host fifth-seeded Babson (14-12) on Saturday in the first semifinal of the 2014 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Basketball Championship. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
 
Last Meeting: The Pioneers defeated the Beavers for the first time in nearly five years with a 63-60 home win on January 22.
 
The Series: Babson has a 32-10 lead and is 4-0 against Smith in the postseason.
 
Fast Facts: The Beavers have won the past five NEWMAC Women's Basketball Championships…Babson defeated Smith in the title game in 2011 and 2012…Giovanna Pickering scored 15 points while Erin Young came off the bench to add 14 points as the Beavers powered past fourth-seeded Wellesley, 70-48, in the first round on Wednesday…Young is shooting 40.8 percent from long range to lead the conference…Smith looks to make its third title game appearance in four years…the Pioneers have registered at least one win over every conference foe in 2013-14…led by Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) with 2.6 steals per game, Smith leads the NEWMAC with 10.2 per contest…Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) ended the regular season pacing the league with 15.3 points per game.
 
Next Up: The winner will return to Ainsworth Gym to face either second-seeded Wheaton or sixth-seeded Springfield tomorrow in the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Championship game at 1:00 p.m.
