Game Preview: Lacrosse vs. Wellesley

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College lacrosse team (0-6) resumes its New England slate with a trip to Wellesley (2-3) for its 2014 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Opener at 12:00 p.m.
 
Last Meeting: The Blue defeated the Pioneers 22-15 in the 2013 season finale on April 20 in Northampton.
 
The Series: It is the 50th meeting between the two programs. Wellesley has a commanding 40-9 lead and has won the last 29 in-a-row. Smith won the first meeting back on April 18, 1981.
 
Fast Facts: The Blue dropped a 14-4 decision to Wesleyan on Wednesday in the middle contest of a three-game homestand…Wellesley ranks second in the conference for free-position percentage (37.2)… Brit Mscisz leads the Blue with 11 goals while Claire Canty has nine goals and a team-high eight helpers for a team-best 17 points…Canty has also scooped up 34 draw controls as Meghan Peterson has caused 10 turnovers…The Pioneers last defeated the Blue, 10-8, on April 28, 1994 in the NEW 8 semifinals…Smith is averaging 18.8 shots per game, good for second amongst NEWMAC teams…Merric Kallfelz (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) has made 52 saves while opponents have only stopped 44 shots…Five Pioneers have recorded double-digit ground balls…The group is led by Kate Detrick (Petaluma, Calif./Sonoma Academy) with 12 as Kallfelz, Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), Quinn Lavigne (Portland, Maine/Portland) and Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) each have 10 while Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) is knocking on the door with nine.
 
Next Up: Smith is slated to host New England College at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Wellesley travels to Florida and will take on Union at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
