Simmons Upends Tennis

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College tennis team was upended by visiting Simmons, 8-1, on Saturday in a non-conference match played at the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.
 
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) ended the match with a victory at No. 5 singles for the second time in as many days with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) triumph over Rachael Downey. Smith and Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) teamed up at No. 1 doubles and had the best result of the three flights as they fell 4-8 to Downey and Margaret Teague.
 
Thresa Reinhard and Sofie Epshtein defeated Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) and Isabelle Eyman (Franconia, N.H./Profile High School) while Meghan Cokely and Caroline Khoury topped Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) and Melanie Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy). The No. 2 and No. 3 flights ended with identical 8-2 scores.
 
Sayarath and Samawi both won a pair of games in each set as they were felled 6-2, 6-2 by Reinhard and Epshtein, respectively. Yi won two in the first and one in the second as she was upended by Cathy Baker, 6-2, 6-1. Both Teague and Cokely added 6-0, 6-1 wins over Cheung and Eyman.
 
The Pioneers (3-12) hit the road next Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match at Connecticut College in New London. Simmons (13-2) heads to Division I Holy Cross for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Friday.
