SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Smith College lacrosse team absorbed a 16-5 setback to Western New England in a non-conference contest on Saturday.
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and
Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) paced the Pioneers with two goals each while
Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) also found the back of the net.
The Golden Bears were led by Kelsey Sherman and Kaitlynn Stevens each had three goals and an assist to lead the Golden Bears, who outshot the Pioneers by a 33 to 24 margin. Shelby Trebbe, Bethany Peters and Taylor Scialdone added two goals apiece.
Sherman and Stevens scored 10 seconds apart beginning at the 29:45 mark to set the tone for Western New England, which scored the first seven goals of the game 8:02 into the game. The hosts enjoyed a 12-1 cushion at the intermission.
Estes halted the initial 7-0 run while Silveria opened the second half with a score nearly a minute into the frame. The Pioneers went on to score three more in the final frame.
Smith hosts Nichols College in the 2014 home opener on Monday at 4:00 p.m. The Golden Bears travel to Mount Holyoke on Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. game.
