BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Smith College tennis team was swept by No. 28 Wellesley and No. 29 Vassar in a pair of 5-0 matches on the first day of the 2014 Seven Sisters Tennis Championship hosted by Bryn Mawr.
The tournament format calls for each squad to enter three singles and two doubles teams with no repeats in each match and follows a round robin format in flights. All matches are best two out of three sets with a twelve-point tiebreak used at six-all.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) looked to continue her momentum in singles as she rebounded from a 5-7 opening set to win the second 6-2 before ultimately falling 4-6 in the third against her opponent from Wellesley at No. 3.
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) won a pair of games in her match at No. 2 while
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) was blanked at No. 1. In doubles action,
Jinan Martiuk (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) and
Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard) went down 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 as
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) and
Isabelle Eyman (Franconia, N.H./Profile High School) were felled 6-0, 6-1.
In the final match of the day, all three singles flights were 6-0, 6-0 in favor of Vassar. Samawi and Smith teamed up to win a pair of games in each set at No. 1 doubles while Yi and Eyman picked up a game in their second set at No. 2.
The Pioneers square off with host Bryn Mawr at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow and close out their four-game slate with a 1:30 p.m. appointment versus Mount Holyoke.
