Tennis Closes Out Weekend at Seven Sisters Championship

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Smith College tennis team, who faced a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday, returned to the BMC Tennis Courts on the campus of Bryn Mawr for the final day of the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship on Sunday. The Pioneers were upended by the hosts 4-1 before falling 5-0 to Mount Holyoke.
 
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.), who was named to the all-tournament team, secured the lone team point of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles in the eye-opener versus Bryn Mawr. Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) won a trio of games at No. 2 while Jinan Martiuk (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) had a competitive match at No. 3.
 
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School) fell in three sets at No. 2 doubles as they went down 2-6 after each side won a set by a 7-5 score. Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) and Isabelle Eyman (Franconia, N.H./Profile High School) were upended 6-2, 6-3.
 
Cheung and Eyman forced a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles while Smith did the same at No. 2 singles as the Pioneers closed out the weekend against Mount Holyoke. Martiuk and Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y./Emma Willard) rebounded from a 1-6 first set to win four games in the second at No. 2 doubles while Samawi and Yi combined to win three games at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
 
The Pioneers close out the 2013-14 campaign on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match at home against Roger Williams.
