Late Westfield State Outburst Dooms Lacrosse

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) led all student-athletes with six goals as the Smith College lacrosse team absorbed an 18-11 setback to Westfield State in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Anne Zawacki (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) added two goals and an assist to go along with a game-high seven draw controls while Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) added a tally and a helper. Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and Olivia Timmins (Medford, Mass./Medford) also scored once for the Pioneers. Ground balls and caused turnovers were balanced amongst the lineup.
 
The Owls were led by Lee Meskevich with five markers followed by Blair Smith with four. Stephanie Lenhardt and Caroline Smart chipped in with hat-tricks as Taylor Eaton scored twice. Lenhardt ended up with seven points as she also doled out five assists. Meghan O'Bruen added a goal and two helpers. Jen Carew and Smart shared game-high honors with six ground balls apiece as Blair Smith amassed six draw controls.
 
Lillquist and Meskevich traded goals to make it a 1-1 game just 1:50 in. Lillquist and Timmins then gave the Pioneers a 3-1 lead with 24:30 left in the frame. Meskevich and Lillquist traded tallies again as Smith held the 4-2 advantage with 19:53 before the break. Lenhardt and Smith found the back of the net at 19:53 and 16:06 to knot the game at 4-4. The Pioneers went into the intermission with a 5-4 lead courtesy of a tally by Lillquist with 9:38 to go.
 
Silveria and Zawacki teamed up just 13 seconds into the second half to make it 6-4 in favor of Smith. Lenhardt responded at 28:56 only to have Zawacki score at 27:48. Meskevich and Smith then scored :34 apart to even the contest at 7-7 just 4:31 into the session. Zawacki and Estes rattled off a pair of goals :13 apart to take the 9-7 lead with 22:48 left. Smart capped a three goal outburst by the Owls as the guests took the 10-9 advantage with 16:30 to play. Lillquist tied it up at 10-10 midway through the frame before Westfield State went on an 8-1 run to close out the contest.
 
Smith's Merric Kallfelz (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and Westfield State's Emma Kervick each stopped nine shots on the day.
 
The Pioneers return to NEWMAC action with a 1:00 p.m. contest at MIT on Saturday. Westfield State travels to Fitchburg State for a 5:00 p.m. MASCAC tilt, also on Saturday.
