HADLEY, Mass. – The 14th-ranked Smith College crew team opened the spring portion of the season with a fourth place finish in the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup on Saturday. The Pioneers welcomed Colby, Middlebury and Wesleyan for their first home spring regatta in 17 years.
The competitors faced a strong current and building headwind as Smith raced five eights. The varsity eight finished behind the field with a time of 7:29.17 while the second varsity eight took third in their heat with a time of 9:02.96 and the third varsity eight had a second place finish in 8:53.6. Smith's novice boats came in second and fourth in their heat with times of 8:14.14 and 9:11.31, respectively.
Wesleyan dominated the day to earn the trophy commemorating the 2006 WPI graduate and rower. While racing between these crews has occurred since 2001, this is the first year a cup has been presented.
Smith Crew will travel for the remainder of their spring races, hoping to gain speed for competitions in Ithaca, NY, Worcester, and at Tufts.
