NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Smith College tennis team fell to host Connecticut College, 8-1, on Saturday in the squad's final test before next weekend's Seven Sisters Championship hosted this year by Bryn Mawr.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) once again led the way as she came up with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles.
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) forced a tiebreak in the first set before ultimately falling 6-7 (2-7), 0-6.
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) came back to win her second set despite falling 1-6, 6-4, 6-8.
Isabelle Eyman (Franconia, N.H./Profile High School) won a pair of games in each of her sets while
Melanie Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) won three in the first and
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) won a game in her second set.
Smith and Samawi had the best chance in doubles as they were upended 4-8, at the top spot. Eyman and Cheung won three games at No. 2 and Sayarath and Yi picked up one at No. 3.
The Pioneers open the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship with a 12:30 p.m. match against Vassar on Saturday.
