Volleyball opens play at Seven Sisters Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Smith volleyball squad suffered a pair of setbacks Saturday at the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar College. The Pioneers fell 3-0 to the host, Vassar, before losing 3-0 to Wellesley College in the nightcap.

In the first match of the day, the Pioneers battled with the Vassar Brewers, but ultimately came up short, as the Brewers won 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-13) to improve to 4-5.

First-year Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe) led the way for the Pioneers with a season-best eight kills. Junior Erin McKissick, playing in her first match of the season, tallied a team-best 13 assists, while senior Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) added 10 digs.

In the 3-0 loss to Wellesley (25-6, 25-17, 25-14), Miller again led the offense, piling up three more kills. First-year Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) registered a team-high 14 digs, while sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) recorded nine digs and a service ace.

Smith (4-4) returns to play tomorrow when they face Bryn Mawr College at 11:30 a.m., followed by a match against the Lyons of Mount Holyoke at 2 p.m.
