Smith Volleyball Grabs 3-1 Win in Season Opener

Box Score BOSTON - The Smith College volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 25-22) win over the Simmons College Sharks on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Moore Gymnasium.

The Pioneers are now 1-0 on the year, while the Sharks fall to 0-4.

Junior outside hitter Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) led the Pioneers with a team-high 12 kills to go along with nine assists and eight digs. First-year outside hitter Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) came within four kills of her first career triple-double, registering six kills, 20 assists and 10 digs. Fellow first-year middle blocker Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) added six kills, while sophomore opposite hitter Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) chipped in six kills.

Senior defensive specialist Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) led four Pioneers with double-digit digs, tallying 13 digs in the win. Marquez added 11 digs while Smith and sophomore libero Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) each totaled 10.

Smith returns to action Friday, Sept. 5 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take part in the Western New England Invitational. The Pioneers open the invitational against the Elms College Blazers on Friday at 7 p.m.
