Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Williams College Ephs scored twice in less than a minute to break open a tie game en route to a 5-2 win over Smith College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday evening.
Williams improves to 4-2 with the win, while Smith dips to 1-5 with the loss.
The Ephs opened the scoring on the stroke of 13 minutes, thanks to Caitlin Conlon's unassisted tally. Conlon wasn't done, as she scored her second goal 30 seconds later to put the visitors ahead, 2-0.
The Ephs scored two more goals in the first half, as Kit Rosen took a feed from Annie VanWagenen for her first goal of the contest, and seven minutes later Isabel Schlee tallied her first marker of the season to put Williams up, 4-0.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the 42
nd minute, as
Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) scored her fourth goal of the season to cut the Ephs lead to 4-1. After Williams answered in the 51
st minute to push their advantage back to four, Vara again cut the deficit to three with her second goal of the match.
Smith continued to apply pressure, but it was too little too late as Williams left Northampton victorious.
Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) played the first 22 minutes in goal for Smith, making two saves, while
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) played the final 48, making four saves.
Margaret Draper got the win in net for Williams, but wasn't called upon to make a stop.
Smith will take the field next on Saturday, September 27 at 12 p.m. in a NEWMAC matchup against Wheaton College. Williams will travel to Connecticut College on Sept. 23 for a NESCAC game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
