Pioneers Hang Tough Against First-Place Beavers

September 28, 2014

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – In a battle of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) teams, the visiting Babson College women's soccer team defeated the hosts from Smith College, 1-0, on Saturday.

The Beavers improve to 7-1-1 and 2-0 in conference play, while the Pioneers fall to 3-3-1 and 1-1.

The first half of the contest was evenly matched, with much of the action coming in the middle third of the field. Smith outshot Babson, 6-4, with both sides tallying two shots on goal during the first stanza.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Beavers were awarded a corner kick. Meghan Tyson placed the ensuing cross on the forehead of Jennifer Narlee, who used her height advantage to head in the match's only goal at the 49:19 mark.

Smith's best chance came in the 59th minute. First-year Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston) took a feed from fellow first-year Vicki Kraft (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Our Lady of the Lourdes) and struck the ball solidly, but the Beavers' keeper turned the shot away at the last second.

Kraft, Isaacs, and junior Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) each took two shots to lead the Pioneer offense. First-year goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) played all 90 minutes in goal for Smith, making five saves. The West Springfield, Mass. native currently leads the NEWMAC in both save percentage (90.2%) and goals-against average (.54).

Smith will look to get back in the win column as they host the Brandeis University Judges on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
