SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) was the lone winner on Tuesday as Smith College dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tennis match to Springfield College by a score of 8-1 at the Appleton Courts.
The Pride are now 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in the NEWMAC while the Pioneers dip to 0-5.
Smith won her fourth straight NEWMAC match, upping her conference record to 4-1 on the season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kelsey Whelpley at number five singles.
Sophomore
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) battled with Rachel London at number one singles before falling 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 10-3 while senior
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) forced a tiebreaker against Stephanie Foster at number two singles, winning the second set 6-1 before dropping the decisive tiebreaker 10-5.
Smith returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Emerson College.
