Marquez, Shaffer pace Smith against Emerson

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - First-year Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) tallied a season-best 24 assists while sophomore Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian) tied a career-high with 10 kills in Smith College's 3-0 loss at Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference volleyball action Tuesday night.

The Pioneers are now 6-10 and 1-5 in NEWMAC play this season, while the Lions improve to 10-7, 3-2.

After Emerson defeated Smith, 25-18 in the first set, the Pioneers rebounded to take a 17-14 lead in set two. The Lions rallied to tie the score, 18-18, and the two sides traded points before Emerson escaped with a 27-25 set two victory. The Lions carried that momentum into the third stanza with a 25-13 win.

Sophomore Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) finished with nine kills, while senior Samantha Danguilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) recorded a team-high 18 digs. Sophomore Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) added 14 digs and a service ace for the Pioneers.

Smith returns home on Oct. 7 when they host Worcester Polytechnic Institute. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
