NORTHAMPTON, MA - Smith College cruised to an 8-1 win over Emerson College Saturday afternoon on the indoor courts in NEWMAC tennis action. The Pioneers who have now won two conference matches in a row improve to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC, while the Lions (0-6, 0-6 NEWMAC) remain winless.
The Pioneers swept doubles, giving Smith a 3-0 lead entering singles.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and
Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) teamed up to claim the victory on the 1 spot, 8-0. Newly formed team of
Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Joanna Kim (Chicago, IL) shared the limelight with an 8-0 victory at number 2 doubles as they powered their way to victory from the baseline and at net.
Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and
Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day) had the toughest match at number three doubles but ended up winning against Jamie Coconis and Tiziana Valquez 8-5.
In singles,
Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) won 6-0, 6-0 for Smith over Tiziana Valquez of Emerson in the top slot.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) played second singles and was the first to finish her 6-0, 6-0 match win with her new found aggressive style.
Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) had a 6-0, 6-0 victory at three singles going to net at every opportunity.
Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day) gave up just one game in her 6-0, 6-1 win answering Gilesea Thomas' strokes. At the five spot,
Annina Van Riper (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win thanks to her consistent play and patience on the court.
Dana Smith (Peekskill, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), competing for the first time at sixth singles, showed poise and determination on court, but ultimately fell to Llin Tasa 4-6, 3-6 in a competitive match.
Smith will be on the road for the next two matches, facing Clark on
Tuesday, October 6 at 5:00 pm.
