Bester's Hat-Trick Not Enough For Pioneers

March 15, 2015

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) scored three goals Sunday, but it wasn't enough for the Smith lacrosse team in an 11-7 road loss to the Salve Regina Seahawks.

Bester put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 when she scored two minutes into the contest, but the Seahawks rattled off seven straight goals and never looked back.

Smith got to within four on Bester's second goal with three minutes remaining in the first half, but Salve Regina added two goals before the break to take a 9-3 lead into the half.

Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) cut into the Seashawks lead with her 10th goal of the season at the 20:51 mark, while Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) took a feed from Quinn Lavigne (Portland, Maine/Portland) to score her 11th goal of the year three minutes later to cut Smith's deficit down to 9-5. The assist was the first point of the season for Lavigne.

After back-to-back Salve Regina goals, Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) tallied her 17th goal of the season and Bester scored her third of the game with 1:19 left to play.

Smith goalie Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made 14 saves in the loss.

The Pioneers (2-4) return to action Thursday when they travel to Johnson State College for a 4 p.m. non-conference contest.
