Slow Start Hampers Smith Lax in Loss to Emerson

March 28, 2015

Box Score BOSTON - The Smith lacrosse team outshot the Emerson Lions, 13-6 in the second half, but ultimately could not overcome their slow start, dropping the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest by the final score of 17-2. First-years Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) and Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) each found the back of the net to account for the Pioneers scoring.

Smith (3-6, 0-2) won the second half, forcing 13 Emerson turnovers while holding their own in the draw circle, claiming 3 of the 5 restarts in the second stanza.

Tayllar Righini recorded five goals and an assist, and Kate Lemire had two goals and six assists to pace the Lions, who improved to 5-2 and 1-1 in NEWMAC competition this season. Meredith Weber also tallied a hat trick as Emerson scored on 17 of its 34 shots.

Junior Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) led the Pioneers with four draw controls and four groundballs while Hamilton was credited with two caused turnovers. Hamilton, Myran and senior Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) each scooped a pair of groundballs, while junior Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) tallied a ground ball, and caused a turnover for Smith.

Hamilton's goal at the 8:53 mark of the first half, her 16th of the season, snapped a 10-0 run to start the game for the Lions. The hosts led 15-1 before Myran netted her 12th marker of the season with 5:20 remaining.

Smith returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Westfield State for a 7 p.m. start.
