DUDLEY, Mass.- The Nichols College Bison rallied from a 3-2 deficit, winning the final four singles matches en route to a 6-3 victory over Smith College in non-conference play Sunday afternoon.
Senior
Ruth Yi (Tacoma, Wash./Todd Beamer) and sophomore
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) were forced to retire trailing 4-3 at number one doubles after a errant serve struck Cheung. Sophomore
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and first-year
Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) got Smith on the scoreboard with an 8-2 win at three doubles.
The Pioneers took a 3-2 lead with a pair of victories in singles play. Dubin cruised past first-year Alanna Judd, 6-1, 6-2, at number one, while Peikes breezed past sophomore Cristina Szepanski, 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 at number two.
Dubin closed out her senior campaign having won three of her last four matches, and six of her last eight matches to finish with a 6-7 record. Peikes won her fifth-straight match, improving to 9-8 in singles play with the win.
Smith concludes the 2015 season with a 6-14 overall record.
