Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Behind a second-half goal from
Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston) and a stout defensive effort, the Smith College Soccer Team opened the 2015 season with a 1-0 victory at Simmons on Tuesday.
After a scoreless opening 45 which saw the Pioneers outshoot the homestanding Sharks 8-4, Isaacs opened her account with a 62
nd-minute finish, gathering a cross at the left post from collegiate debutant
Isabella Ayvaz (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) and slotting home inside the iron. The goal was the first of the sophomore's career.
Isaac's marker would stand as the gamewinner thanks to the play of the Smith back line and goalkeeper
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield), who stopped four Simmons efforts, two apiece in each half. The shutout was the seventh in the sophomore's young career, pulling her into a tie for seventh in program history with Lindsey Gregor '12.
Simmons played the first shot of the game on Hall in the seventh minute before the Pioneers put the Sharks on their heels with steady pressure. Gigi Ross and Isaacs each forced a pair of saves from Simmons netminder Briana Hayes before the game was 40 minutes old, and a 45
th minute save by Hayes on a header from
Annabel Calhoun (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) kept the match level at the intermission.
After Hall preservered the stalemate in the 60
th minute with her third stop of the match, the Pioneers again turned the run of play, lighting the scoreboard with their eighth on-target attempt of the match.
Hall was tested just once more, recording an 85
th minute save to seal the win.
With the shutout, Smith recorded a season-opening clean sheet for the fourth time in five years. The Pioneers return to action on Friday when they visit the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, Calif. Kick-off is scheduled for 10:00 PM EST.
