Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) recorded 12 kills and
Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) served eight aces as the Smith College Volleyball Team defeated Husson in four sets on Saturday at the 2015 Smith Invitational. Smith posted 18 aces as a team and held the Eagles to a a -.047 hitting percentage in the dominating performance.
The Pioneers jumped out early against Husson, blazing to a 25-14 opening set victory and following it with a 25-13 second set. After the Eagles saved four match points to avoid the sweep by taking the third set 26-24, Smith responded with a 25-9 fourth set victory for their second win of the season.
In addition to her eight aces, Rojas led the Pioneers attack with nine assists and was second on the team with a career-high nine kills.
Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe) had four kills of her own as Smith finished with a season-high 31 in the match.
Jullie Voorhes continued her stellar defensive play to start the season with 13 digs and added four service aces.
Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) controlled the net defensively for the Pioneers with five blocks, three solo and two assisted.
In their second match of the day, the Pioneers fell to Middlebury in straight sets despite seven more kills from Smith and 16 digs from Voorhes, who has now recorded 98 on the year and stands just 52 shy of 1,000 for her career.
Middlebury hit .280 in the match and finished 3-0 at the Smith Invitational without dropping a set against Manhattanville, Ursinus, and the Pioneers.
For their performances in the Invitational, Rojas and Voorhes were named to the All-Tounrmanet team. Vorrhes finished the weekend with 54 digs and five service aces in three matches while Rojas concluded with 13 kills, 28 assists, 12 aces, and 26 digs.
The Pioneers return to the court on Wednesday night when they host Clark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Play is scheduled for 7 p.m.
