Voorhes Records 20 Digs in 3-0 Loss to Clark

September 15, 2015

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior libero Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) reached 20 digs for the third time in seven games and was joined by Sakura Tamaki (New York, N.Y./Fiorello H. LaGuardia) (13) and Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) (11) in double figures, but the Smith College Volleyball Team fell by a 3-0 to undefeated Clark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams on Tuesday.

Voorhes, who stands just 32 digs shy of 1,000, is averaging a career-best 4.92 digs per set, fourth-best in the NEWMAC.

Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) led the Pioneers with four kills, with first-year Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) and sophomores Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) and Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe) each adding a pair.

Smith entered the week holding opponents to a .087 hitting percentage, fourth in the NEWMAC and 39th overall in Division III, but three Clark players reached double digit kills, including first-year Ana Mercado who led all players with 14 kills.  Six NEWMAC teams entered the week ranked in the Top 50 nationally in opponent hitting percentage.

The Pioneers still hold a 25-6 edge in the all-time series between the two teams dating back to 1978.

Smith returns to the court on Saturday for a tri-match with NEWMAC-foe Babson and Lasell.  First serve against Babson is scheduled for 12 p.m. with Smith-Lasell to follow at 4 p.m.
